Oh What a Day!
Oh what a day!
Wednesday the 11th of August 2010 had finally arrived and everybody that was involved was revising all the math strategies that they learnt over the past two weeks with Mrs. Raj. They were revising because there was a competition that was being held in the hall called ‘The Duffy Money Competition’.
The Duffy Money Competition organised by the Duffy twins Craig and Paul was all about financial literacy. We learnt a lot about assets, liabilities, income, expenditure, kiwi saver, interest, credit and debit cards and other money matters. It was terrifying at the start but as time slipped by it became extremely exciting.
In total there were 9 groups of 3. The competition was challenging but it also gave our minds a good workout. Paul hosted the competition. It took approximately an hour before our excited heart beats slowed down. At the end of the competition Paul collected all the answer sheets and marked them.
Waiting for the results was agonizing but we were over the moon when Paul read out the answers. Our group was happy because we had got almost every answer correct and we came first. In second place was Team Piggybank. Earle, Longoa’a and Tama were proud winners. They each got a brand new cell phone. Then to our surprise Paul announced that our team, Team Thingy, had come first. We also got a cell phone each and we were ecstatic. Our eyes turned to our friend Olivia who had not received a phone. Then, to our surprise Paul announced that he had two extra cell phones to give away. He asked two very hard questions and Coltrane won the first cell phone while our friend, Olivia, won the other one. We were so happy for her.
The competition was so much fun even though only two groups went through to the Inter-School Competition. Everybody had so much fun that they forgot about losing and celebrated with all their friends. We would all like to say a big thank you to Paul and his twin brother Craig for organising the competition. We would also like to say a huge thank you to Mrs Raj for preparing us for the competition. THANK YOU!!!

Jorjah's Mother's Day Letter
I think my mum should be chosen to get a prize because she is a single mother that looks after five kids but she always finds a way to get to all our shows and prize giving. She always goes that extra mile just for me. She is a very strong woman. She is the best mum I could ever hope for.
When I was little I wasn’t that good at spelling or maths so my mum would stay awake all night and cut colourful shapes out and put words or numbers on them to help me. She would always go out of her way to practise with me .I remember when she used to make biscuits and cakes and whenever she did, she got out my apron and I would help out. I always got the extras and the best thing is, she still to this day does the same thing and I love it.
She deserves this gift after everything she has done for our family. She has been through all the tough times we had but even when we were having trouble she was always there for my siblings and I. I love her with all my heart and I know she loves me too.
I just want to make her day that much more special.

Students Attitude to Smoking?
Well after survrying some students on this issue these are their views and reasons.
There are two very strong and persuasive sides to this issue where some students say yes to smoking while others feel every cigarette is taking a short period of their life away.
Here are some reasons why some students think it is a good idea. One reason is that it calms you down. Other reasons are they smoke because it is too hard to quit (in other words it is addictive), It is cool to smoke and students try to show off to get attention.
On the other hand many students say no to smoking. One reason is that smoking kills and takes years of your life away. Another reason is thatt cigarettes are a waste of their money. They feel that they will not be good role models as adults. They do not like to smoke and disappoint their parents. Smoking stains your teeth, your teeth will start to rot and you will have bad breath.
In summary although it calms you down, it is taking years off your life which you could be spending with your friends and family.
Therefore I think that nobody should smoke and that smoking is not good for you.

Tamaki Intermediate's Swimming Carnival
All lessons were geared towards learning basic survival skills in water. The emphasis was on learning the different strokes as well as having fun.
We celebrated learning to swim by participating in our School Swimming Carnival. The event was full of races in the different categories and lots of fun activities. There was a lot of noise and cheering all the way. We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly.

Just so Story - How the Tiger got Black Stripes

Once upon a time there were a group of animals. Now these were not your every day animals. These animals were different. They were hardly ever seen or spotted. These creatures were shy but if you upset them you would be in BIG trouble. One day that all changed...
One early Thursday morning a scientist came to Flicenpogic Forest to study these mysterious creatures. They lived only in this forest (funny that). The very night that he arrived in this forest was the very night everything changed in this secluded forest. He set up a campfire by a tree, with purple and orange spotted leaves and a bright blue trunk, and fell asleep.
Now I know what you may be thinking right about now. I am sure you have never heard of the Flicenpogic Forest or even thought about a tree with spotted leaves and brightly coloured trunks and may not believe me but you have definitely heard of these creatures. You know what they can do and what they like to do. They once actually did live in those types of trees but no one knew that they lived there because there was no one tall enough to see so high and no one bothered even going to this place.
The scientist set up camp in his comfortable tent. Somehow his fire caught light on the trunk of one of these trees. It was a windy night and the sparks went flying. The fire started to make its way up the long trunk.
Meanwhile the scientist realized it was getting extremely hot and it woke him up. He went outside and saw the tree on fire. Then he spotted what he had come here for, what he had been hoping to see. These mysterious creatures were stuck in the trees. By now the fire was spreading to the other trees in the forest. Some of the creatures had big black burn marks on their fur. It made them look scarier than they already were. Right now however they were the ones that were scared.
The scientist screamed for the local village people to come and help put out the fires. The fire was eventually put out. Once it was all over half of the creatures were covered in black marks. These creatures you know as tigers. This is one of the reasons tigers are scared of fires but that’s another story. Animals feared the ones with black marks and so they survived longer than the others. This is how tigers got their black stripes.

Room 16 - Inquiry learning is a clever way to learn!
This term we have been busy filming for our BlogSpot Tamaki Tales. Earle is our camera whiz! Some more of us are training to be cameramen and presenters. Thanks to Miss Walley and Mr. Munnik. All of us students involved with EHSAS work have had to work on our voice and expression.
In unit studies we have studied about conflicts and how to resolve them. We studied about conflicts in the world and how they are being resolved by the world leaders and common people. We made conflict art, using words about conflict. Each student in the extension unit is researching about a different world conflict. Social Inquiry learning is a clever way to learn!
We have been writing a lot of awesome narratives and painless poems for our writing. We have endeavored to make sure our writing has interesting adjectives, similes and better phrases. Overall it has been a fantastic experience as first years and we have had a lot of fun. We are looking forward to next term and different learning adventures.
