Loud Shirt Fun

Loud Shirt Day

Students and members of the staff at Tamaki Intermediate school dressed up in loud shirts on 19th September 2008 to bring about awareness of the hearing impaired people and their needs. Not only were we dressed in brightly coloured shirts, we wore accessories that made us look great! We wore ear muffs to experience a soundless world around us. We appreciated our sense of hearing. We also used sign language that day to understand how the hearing and speech impaired people go about their normal lives. All of us who dressed outrageously donated a gold coin towards buying more hearing devices for the hearing impaired people. Thanks to Ms Walley and Ms Tauri, Room 1 won the prize for best participation and cute and loud shirts.

Year 7 Cultural Expo

Learning about Festivals and Celebrations in New Zealand and other parts of the World was a great experience and was fun. Room 1 studied about the festivals, celebrations and ceremonies in the United Kingdom. Students researched information on St. Patrick's Day, May Day, Guy Fawke's Day, the Royal ceremonies etc. Room 8 studied about important festivals and celebrations in India. Room 9 studied about the culture of the Aboriginal people of Australia. Room 11 studied about Japanese clothes, food, and celebrations in Japan. Room 12 learned all about South African people, places, festivals and celebrations and Room 16 researched information about Chinese celebrations and other general topics about China.
All students in these rooms were grouped to research information using the following steps. Locate and collect information, skim read the information, note take main points, plan a presentation and prepare a presentation based on our theme 'Festivals and Celebrations in NZ and other parts of the world'. We learned a lot and had fun putting our projects together for a common Cultural Expo for all to see. We invited students from other schools to view our projects and share our learning

Term 3 'Exciting Times'

We thought term 3 was the best term so far. We had some good times and really enjoyed learning about different cultures. We studied Maori, Polynesian and even Japanese culture.
In week 5 the Pacifica drama group came to our school to perform. It was really cool. They performed dances from Tahiti, Samoa, Tonga and even Hawaii. Some of the students from our school got on stage to perform with them.
This term we have been learning about Japan and we have found out some very interesting facts about Japan. We are even writing to pen pals in a Japanese school! They sent us letters a few weeks ago answering all the questions we had about Japanese life. In week 8 we also got to make sushi as a class. It was delicious!
This term we have also been working on our physical fitness. We have been training hard for cross country and working on our large ball skills in house sports. Two people from room 11 came in first on the beep test! We also did really well on the cross country run.
For next term, we want our goal to be to work hard as a class and achieve things we did not achieve this term.

Term 3 was fun!

In room1 the first week of school we had a show and tell of our culture. Everyone was anxious about what each other would think. We each showed an item that represented our culture. We also created a class tree. Each leaf has our name and where we come from, it looks so cool.
The QUEST performance was marvellous. Laura was one of the three blind mice and dwarf. She looked very appealing. Ma’ata was goldilocks she was the best looking girl on the show! Kupakwashe was baby bear and a dwarf. She looked cute in her bear suit. Nooroa did a good job with the sounds. Abraham was great and actually looked like a pig from Texas. All four performances were great the hard work real paid of!
In week 5 we had cross country. From our class Chris came 1st and Ma’ata came 3rd. Ma’ata and Chris went to compete in the Eastern Zone championships. It was very tiring yet good practice going out for a run around the field.
All term we read the novel stormbreaker in for shared reading. It was an interesting story full of action. Once we had finished the story we got to watch the movie it was really cool.
In week six and seven Miss Walley went on a school trip to the Cook Islands. They had a great time in the sun and sand. Levi went as well and had a really great time. The rest of us spent our time at school and missed Miss Walley.
When Miss Walley came back we had piles of work to do on our project. We split into four groups and did projects on St Patrick’s Day, Royal Ceremonies, May Day and Bonfire Night. We even made a Guy Fawkes man. Our class had the most magnificent projects - thanks to Mrs Walley, Miss Walley and Mrs Tauri. When it was time for the cultural festival everyone adored our projects, even Mrs Raj thought we did really well. Laura, Levi, Jackson and Nooroa dressed up in costumes. We put a lot of hard work into this project of learning about festivals and celebrations in different parts of the world.
This term, two new wonderful class members called Jackson and Justin have joined Room 1.

Our Term 3 Memories and Reflections

Here are the Term 3 reflections of what we did and achieved at school.
Term three has been full of glee and everyone enjoyed it. It was full of excitement due to the trips, our cultural Expo and many more.
Technology was awesome this term because we had Art. We learnt about the elements of art. We also had food technology in which we made food that was yummy, scrumptious and delicious.
Tamaki today was magnificent because we got to learn a lot in terms of video taping in an appropriate manner. Mrs.Raj supported us in uploading our awesome work on to www.tamaktales.blog spot.com. This motivated us to produce quality work and also complete our work on time.
Quest production was brilliant. Our parents were very impressed about the show directed by the Tamaki intermediate’s music teacher Miss Dekker. It was awesome entertainment for all of us.
Basketball was exceptionally marvellous because some of the girls drove down with Mr Webb and Ms Curren to the basketball Nationals in Tauranga. They challenged numerous schools and came seventh out of all the schools that were there. They played fabulously.
One of our students went to Rarotonga on a school trip and had a lot of fun.
For our BP Challenge we had to make a business suit for both genders. We developed designing skills and critical thinking. We enjoyed being creative and the outfits looked great.
We also went to an exciting place called Maritime Museum. We were so lucky because our whole class got to go. We learnt to make different kinds of knots and went on a cruise to the Harbour Bridge.
We had earthquake drills at least 3 to 4 times and I think we are getting better and better every time we learn it.
Our China projects took us incredibly long to complete and display. But in the end we were thrilled that we completed it just in time for our year 7 expo. We made a model of the great wall of China, lanterns, dragons etc. and learnt a lot about the festivals and celebrations in different countries. We also developed a sense of respect and tolerance towards the other cultures.
Year 7 Expo was great because we had a countless number of schools and parents visiting our expo. While we were there we made videos and took photos.
That’s all the excitement we have had for term 3 and we can’t wait for next term.

Fantastic artists of Tamaki Intermediate

Year 8 students have been exploring different media and ways of presenting their visual ideas. The theme was objects, shapes and forms found outside e.g. birds, trees, hill shapes or a simple lanscape. They produced lino prints, a painting work with hot and cold colours, pastel work and a mixed media artwork based around a tree shape.
