The Chinese Flood That Took So Many

The China Flood began in early May 2010. Heavy Monsoon rains caused the big flood in China.
The deaths occurred when people were washed into fast flowing rivers and mudslides buried houses and people in China.

Many carried bundles of possession salvaged from the water that turned the streets into rivers . One of the men that survived said, " My mother and father were in their 60’s and my brothers, all 3 of them are still buried in the house.”

More than 10 million people had lost property, many have been injured and others have suffered from disease caused by the flooding waters.

In China 392 people died and 232 had been reported missing. Aids came in to help the Chinese people. The First Aid and the Local Red Cross volunteers on the ground evacuated people. First Aid people supplied emergency relief like food, clothing and water.

Jets of water shot through three Gorge Dam on 27 July. On Wednesday the flow peaked at 1.96 million cubic feet.

TREE ADVENTURE

On Tuesday 18 May 10 students from our school participated on a tree adventure trip held in Wood-hill Forest.

Firstly we waited for the police to arrive and their vans to pick us up. When they arrived the girls hopped into one van and the boys hopped into the other van. We stopped of at Point England School to pick up some other students.

It was sure a long drive but we were excited and nervous at the same time. When we arrived at the place, the fun began. After that we changed into our P.E gear and then we put on our harness for safety. We were eager and a little freaked out at how high the obstacles were.

We got to do each course after the tree adventure staff showed us how it’s used. Everyone was eager to start.

Eventually we started and everyone went on different kinds of courses and levels. Some of us made it to the end course which was number 8.
Last of all we ended our fun adventure and headed back to school. We took off our safety gear and said thank you to the staff and headed back. When we returned, we were exhausted from all that fun activity. Thanks to the police for transporting us safely to the tree adventure and back.
THAT WAS TREMENDOUS!!!

Room 9 ‘s Highlights of Term 3

Term 3 has been very busy for us. Students have been involved in a variety of activities throughout the term. Some students travelled to Tonga and met with distant relatives while back here at Tamaki the rest of us competed in a mathematics game called Mathex which involved a lot of running if you didn’t give the correct answer.
We enjoyed a visit by an Australian music group called ‘Endless Praise’ whose message was “Make Good Choices”. We ran in the school cross country and played in the class gutter board competition.
The highlight of the term had to be the visit by fitness guru Billy Graham who had us all in hysterics. He was an ex professional boxer and danced and skipped around the stage like a teenager reminding us “Not to be afraid to ask for help”. Not bad for a man in his sixties. These are some of the highlights for the term.

Room 9 Highlights and Challenges

The highlights for Room 9 this term were our Zoo trip, our sports afternoon with the Glen Innes Police, Tennis with Mark Lewis, 3 minute prepared speeches and the Deziah Dance group who did some awesome hip hop moves and flips.

All students in year 7 participated in 3 minute prepared speeches on how plants and animals adapt to their environment. Shonty-lee and Berttina represented Room 9 in the school finals and did very well. The trip to Auckland Zoo was awesome and it helped us in understanding the ways in which animals and plants adapt to different situations and gave us a lot of information for our speeches. In inquiry learning we did Individual Research projects on how Refugees and new immigrants adapt to situations in the new countries they choose to live in.

Our teacher Mr. Kopa-Katene keeps on encouraging us to improve the way we write for an audience. This term we wrote explanations, information reports, speeches and recounts of interesting events that happened at school. In Math we have been working hard learning about patterns and relationships in Algebra, and practicing Multiplication and Division strategies. We also learned how to measure objects and find areas and perimeters of shapes.

Room 9 also had a trainee teacher Whaea Maria who stayed with us for five weeks. She shared with us some awesome Maori games and put on a shared lunch for all the class before she left.

This term has been a really busy term and students have achieved satisfactory results in their work and made positive changes in their behavior. By Hola and Berttina

Room 9 - Our “Intermediate” journey has begun!

The biggest event for us this term would have to be the powhiri to welcome the year 7 students and the newly appointed staff to the school. Most of the new students had not witnessed a powhiri before and were really anxious when they had to perform in the powhiri as well. It felt good to be welcomed. After the powhiri it feels like we belong here.
This term we had to take a lot of tests to enable the teachers to understand what we know and what we need to be taught. We worked hard at producing our Independent Research Topic about “Me, Myself and I”. We have also done some awesome work in researching about the Treaty of Waitangi and our topic study about “H2O – Water”. With all the other things, this term we have learnt a lot of new maths ideas in algebra and statistics.
The students and the teacher in Room 9 have been working extraordinarily hard through out the term. We have been part of wonderful programmes like organised sport at school and at PYCC, Tennis coaching for Rooms 9 and 10 and swimming sessions which culminated in the most exciting swimming carnival.
Our goal this year is to produce quality writing. Mr Kopa -Katene always gives us colourful ideas to help us in our writing. This motivates us to produce interesting work.
We have put in a lot of hard work to achieve our personal goals. We all have improved in areas like listening to adults, behaving appropriately and working hard in class. We try to finish our work on time. However, if some students don’t finish their work on time they attend the catch- up club with one of the teachers.
On the whole, it has been a busy first term with a lot of new rules and routines to get used to. Our journey at intermediate has truly begun!
